A pattern that can only be read in the shadows

On the black version of the Manaus, the zigzag quilting loses all color contrast: only the relief remains. The lines indent the surface, and the pattern appears or disappears depending on the angle of the light—clearly visible from the side, almost erased from the front. The result is much more discreet than on light-colored leather, which is what makes this version easy to wear in settings where beige would attract attention. The work is the same; its interpretation is reversed.

A construction without competing elements

Clean-finished round neckline, centered straight zip, straight cuffs without ribbing: the upper part of the garment remains a bare surface. On black leather, this simplicity further enhances the effect, since the only thing catching the light is precisely the relief at the bottom. A stand-up collar or visible pockets would have created competing shadows and diluted the pattern. The coherence of the design therefore depends as much on what is absent as on what is present. The straight cuffs, without ribbing or tabs, close the sleeves without introducing any new relief.

Black as a wardrobe staple

This version can be worn without a second thought: jeans, flowing trousers, a straight dress, a skirt. The open neckline accommodates a turtleneck or a scarf, which a stand-up collar would not, while the short length preserves the waistline. The soft, lightweight lambskin allows the quilted bottom to fall naturally without stiffness. In a wardrobe, this is the piece you reach for when you do not want the jacket to dictate the outfit.

A specialization that has never been abandoned

Since its foundation in 1972 by Jürgen Raberg, the house that became Mauritius has worked with just one main material, leather, and one category, clothing. Its name change, from the historic Gipsy to the current Mauritius, marked its fiftieth anniversary. Katrin and Christian Raberg now run the family business. This focus on a single field explains the breadth of the collections, which cover jackets, coats and overcoats within the same season.
