Velvet on a Long Garment

The Lilithy leaves smooth leather behind for a suede lambskin, sanded on the surface until it develops a velvety feel and a completely matte finish. On a coat, this material changes the way light behaves: it is absorbed rather than reflected, giving the garment a depth that smooth leather never creates on such a large surface. The suede also reveals movement—the nap lies differently depending on the direction in which the hand passes over it, and the shade varies from one area to another.

Camel, the Signature Colour of the Style

Light-coloured suede best highlights these variations in the direction of the nap, which dark shades soften until they disappear. Camel is also the traditional colour for this type of coat, and it works on a long garment for a specific reason: a warm, light tone avoids the heavy effect that black creates over a large surface. It pairs well with ecru, brown, grey and denim.

A Belt That Defines the Silhouette

The metal-buckle belt is the only shiny element on the coat and the only point of contrast against an entirely matte surface. When fastened, it defines the waist and opens the bottom into a corolla shape; when undone, it allows the garment to fall straight from the shoulders to the hem. The cuff straps complete the reference to classic tailoring. Soft and lightweight lambskin gives the lower part the movement needed for the drape to form beneath the belt. A thicker hide would remain stiff and disrupt the line at this point.

The Mauritius Name

Adopted for the company’s fiftieth anniversary, the name Mauritius replaced Gipsy, the name under which the company founded by Jürgen Raberg in 1972 became known. The craft itself has not changed: leather clothing, from short jackets to coats. The company has entered its second generation, in the hands of Katrin and Christian Raberg. Its collections are now distributed in more than fifty countries.
